Hazel Grace is a 16 year old who has cancer. In the beginning of the book she starts out feeling hopeless and doesn't see the point in having a social life and making new friends. She spends most of her time watching her favorite show and reading books (most of the time it's the same book.) Hazel just wants to be a normal teenager. When a guy at her support group (Augustus Waters) comes into Hazel's life, he changes her life. He shows her that there is a life worth living with cancer. Augustus shows her that she has to try to have a life outside the house. That Hazel can't let cancer beat her down. Augustus teaches her to have fun and leave the cancer behind.
